It's hard to imagine something more cheerful than standing on the beach in Syðrugøta, singing along with sea shanties in the salty ocean breeze.
Ever since they started playing over 10 years ago, The Longest Johns have been driven by a pure love for sea shanties. When their recording of the old shanty "Wellerman" gained popularity, everyone suddenly started talking about sea shanties.
This sparked a trend and launched the careers of many since that.
The Longest Johns have over the years released several old sea shanties as well as their own compositions. A new release from them is expected in the spring of 2024.
They sing and play instruments such as the harmonium, guitar, and mandolin. Sometimes, they dive into pure a capella singing. It's warm, intimate, and honest – with a hint of pirate.
