Faroese western/electro duo Kóboykex, formed by Sigmund Zachariassen and Heiðrik á Heygum, have shared their debut single ‘Midnight Gale’, a song about lonely fishermen. The pair are both prominent musicians within the Faroese music scene. Sigmund is known for his many punk projects, notably critically acclaimed punk band Joe & The Shitboys and Heiðrik is known for crafting the melancholic indie pop that has made him a household name on the islands. Coming from two very different musical backgrounds, together the pair create music that draws inspiration from the unlikely combination of country and electronica as well as artists like Beck, Ennio Morricone, Patsy Cline, The White Stripes, Mirwais.
Their new single ‘Midnight Gale’, is a song about lonely fishermen. The Faroes have a relatively large deficit of women, so many older men get mail-order-brides from East-Asia. The song questions whether they’re finally happy once their brides have arrived. On the track's composition process, Sigmund says “We met some evenings in February drinking wine and Irish coffee. Faroe Islands is very far north so it’s super dark during the winter. We wanted to write a very standard country song and include as many clichés as possible. When it came time to record we ended up using an old harddisk recorder from 2005, and later on there was a malfunction with the drum machine, which is how we ended up with the sound you hear on ‘Midnight Gale’”.
