World-Class VJ-ing

As a DJ mixes sound, a VJ mixes light.

VJ-ing is somewhat like a live performance with images, using sound or music as the foundation for visuals.

Danish VJ Mad ES or Mads has come to this year's G! festival and today held a workshop explaining his exciting craft from both creative and technical perspectives.

"It's about a mixture of motion design, graphic design and 3D design. It is creative, but also very technically demanding," says Mads, who was educated at the Danish School of Media and Journalism and works daily with artists, clubs and other clients.

"Projection mapping" is one of the most exciting innovations shaping these visual live performances. With this technique, you can map pictures, lights, shadows and other content into different shapes and objects in the room you're working in, on the stage or in other places.

There could for example be a performance sent up onto a 40-meter high wall. You can see another example in the Barn (Fjós) this year, where a design follows a artwork that comes to live with the help of VJ Mad Es.

"It is about supporting the music and giving the music an extra dimension," explains Mads.

The Barn (Fjósið) is one of the most unique stages at G!, and tomorrow, on Friday, there will once again be visual offerings on the schedule there with Nóllywood films and music videos.
