Reykjavíkurdætur (IS)

The Daughters of Reykjavik, since their 2013 debut, have gained international attention presenting an alternative side to Icelandic Fem culture.

What started out as Reykjavik’s first women’s rap night in a basement, saw hundreds attend, and 14 girls repeatedly step to the mic. The resulting track ‘Reykjavikurdætur’ prompted the press to name the MC’s a band, and so the group was born.

Their confrontational songs, clocking hundreds of thousands of Youtube plays, cover issues such as slut shaming and body positivity. Iceland’s Punk hip hop crew have put the country’s female rappers on the map. Trap Beats, 808 bass and an army of Nordic Fem Cee’s! It is a very interesting time for gender equality in music
